History: Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) - The origin of the breed is directly descended from the old Roman War Dog, like the Neapolitan Mastiff. The Cane Corso is lighter than the Neapolitan and was used as a hunter of wild game (boar, bear, stag etc). They were also used as a war dog and gladiator in arena's. Italy still uses the breed as a protector, guard dog and as a working dog for protection of livestock and property.
They are a very effective guard dog by looks alone. They are excellent watch dogs and can be very protective. It is extremely important that they be socialized and trained from an early age, since this breed is very powerful and can be aggressive if not probably trained. They are very loving and very devoted to their owners and family members. They enjoy being around other animials, family, friends and children, but must be socialized with others at a early age.
They are successful show dogs, participating in obedience events, herding instinct and weight pull contests. You can also visit the Cane Corso Assoc of America at www.canecorso.org for more information.
